Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

As any significant awards ceremony nears, one notices a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
