The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
