Defense Department Report Finds Defense Secretary Put Military Personnel in Danger with Messaging App Conversation.

A long-awaited Department of Defense report has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by disclosing classified intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Details of the Event

The chat group in dispute contained particulars about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen against Houthi militants. This chat came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other individuals in the group reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not approved for handling classified information.

Serious Threat to Forces

The inspector general's report found that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the safety of US troops if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

However, the report acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to downgrade the material he distributed, though it was not specified whether he actually did so.

Hegseth's Reaction

The source said that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed information that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the operation. He added that he had the right to declassify material and considered the inspector general to be partisan.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been provided to lawmakers. An unclassified version is expected to be released in the coming days.
